Less than two months ago, it looked like Sen. John McCain’s long-time support for amnesties for illegal aliens, the h-1b visa program, and other cheap labor import schemes had sunk his presidential aspirations. And he knew it:
‘The reality is it wasn’t our financial problems that caused our drop in the polls,’ [Sen. John McCain] said in an interview. ‘It was immigration. That’s just a fact. I can show you the polling data to prove it.’
McCain’s message a hard sell in the heartland
Globalization can hit a nerve with audiences

Lately, however, it appears New Hampshirites have forgotten. According to the latest polls, the McCain campaign is making a resurgence and now leads in the state that hosts the nation’s first presidential primary just days from now.
I wish every primary voter in New Hampshire could read a few of the thousands of applications to pick lettuce for John McCain filled out by Americans harmed by the policies he has long championed in Washington.
In April, 2006, John McCain defended his support for an amnesty for illegal aliens before an audience of union representatives in Washington, DC. We need illegal aliens to do the worst jobs, Boss McCain told the crowd of American workers, ’cause none of you are going to do them.
Some in the crowd shouted, Pay us a decent wage!
Senator McCain responded by offering $50 an hour to anyone who would go to Arizona and pick lettuce. “You can’t do it, my friends,” he said.
Calling his bluff, ProjectUSA put up an online job application to pick lettuce for John McCain. After the application was featured on Lou Dobbs’ CNN newscast, thousands of Americans responded, many leaving comments about what they thought of John McCain’s offer.
The comments left were by real Americans, many with real stories of real suffering brought about by the very policies in Washington John McCain supports. Unless your heart is as calloused as a gravedigger’s hands, you won’t have to read through many of the comments to become convinced that any public official is unfit for public office who supports amnesty for illegal aliens, the h-1b visa, and other ongoing cheap labor programs.
The McCain campaign’s earlier disintegration over his pro-corporate immigration policies did as much as anything in the last decade to stave off the anti-borders profiteers and anti-US sovereignty ideologues in Washington, DC. If John McCain should come back and win or place a strong second in New Hampshire, it could easily give his campaign the boost it needs to win it all. The message that that would send to Washington would be a devastating blow to all those who believe US immigration policy should serve the best interests of the American people.
In this last week or so before the New Hampshire primary, lets see if we can put as many of these American stories as possible into the hands of New Hampshire’s voters.
We will have 40 page booklets, “America for Dummies,” of the lettuce-picking applications printed up and delivered–same day–to one of the Republican presidential campaigns in New Hampshire. We’re betting moles will hand these out at every John McCain event in New Hampshire between now and the primary. To see a rendition of the booklet’s cover, and to order, click here.
