The perversity that characterizes the immigration debate, and, in particular, the immigration debate in the U.S. Senate, is epitomized by the sight of Sen. Ted Kennedy on the floor of the Senate exhorting his colleagues “not to repeat the mistakes of the past.”
The biggest mistake this country ever made was letting Ted Kennedy anywhere near immigration policy. Sen. Kennedy was the primary architect of the 1965 legislation responsible for the “broken” system now in place.
Nevertheless, with Senators Martinez, Menendez, and Salazar lurking in the background, their ethnicities loaded and cocked, there he was, crying, “Aaaah, let’s not repeat, aaaah, …the mistakes of the past! …the mistakes of the past!”
It was like an editorial in the Wall Street Journal decrying the lack of corporate patriotism. It was like a corporate lobbyist bemoaning corruption. It was like Jerry Springer condemning the coarsening of America.
I say we grant the senator his wish and not repeat the mistakes of the past. We should leave Sen. Kennedy parked at the Hawk and Dove, or some other nearby saloon, until S.1348 is defeated.
